1881 Honours Navy Strength

History

Launched in 2020 by Peebles Hydro Hotel in Scotland, 1881 Honours Navy Strength Gin pays tribute to the historical significance of navy strength gins, which were required to be at least 57% ABV to ensure gunpowder would still ignite if the spirit was spilled on it.

Manufacturing Method

Distilled using pure Scottish mountain water from the Shieldgreen spring and a traditional copper still. The recipe includes 12 botanicals, with a strong emphasis on juniper, coriander, and angelica root. The higher alcohol content helps extract more essential oils from the botanicals.

Origin

Produced at the Peebles Hydro Hotel distillery in the Scottish Borders, making it one of Scotland's highest distilleries at 200m above sea level.

Taste Profile

Bold and intense with pronounced juniper and pepper notes. The higher alcohol content (57% ABV) amplifies the botanical flavors, creating a robust profile with strong citrus notes and a long, warming finish. Spice and earthy notes become more prominent with a drop of water.
