2020 Domaine de Montille, Monthelie Premier Cru ‘Les Duresses'

History

Domaine de Montille, established in 1750, is one of Burgundy's most respected producers. Under Hubert de Montille's leadership from 1947, the domaine became known for terroir-driven wines. Today, his son Étienne continues this legacy while transitioning to biodynamic farming. The Monthelie 'Les Duresses' represents their expertise in crafting wines from lesser-known Premier Cru sites.

Manufacturing Method

Grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted. Following biodynamic principles, fermentation occurs with native yeasts in temperature-controlled wooden vats. The wine undergoes gentle extraction with minimal pump-overs. Aging takes place in French oak barrels (20% new) for 12-15 months. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its authentic character.

Origin

Produced in Monthelie, a small village in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. 'Les Duresses' is a Premier Cru vineyard situated on the border with Auxey-Duresses, characterized by limestone-clay soils with excellent drainage. The vineyard's eastern exposure ensures optimal ripening while maintaining freshness.

Taste Profile

Shows refined aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, and subtle earthy notes. The palate reveals elegant red fruit flavors with hints of forest floor and fine spices. Medium-bodied with silky tannins, the wine displays typical Burgundian finesse with remarkable balance between fruit, acidity, and mineral elements. The finish is long and precise.

Technical Details

Made from 100% Pinot Noir from vines averaging 40 years old. The 2020 vintage was marked by early ripening and concentrated fruit due to drought conditions, resulting in wines with excellent ripeness while maintaining fresh acidity. Annual production is limited to approximately 2,500 bottles.
