2023 Herzog Chalk Hill
History
Herzog Wine Cellars traces its roots back to Czechoslovakia in 1948. After immigrating to the United States, Eugene Herzog worked at a New York winery before establishing his own operation.
Manufacturing Method
Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted. The wine undergoes primary fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by partial malolactic fermentation. A portion of the wine is aged in French oak barrels (30% new) for 12 months, while the remainder stays in stainless steel to preserve freshness.
Origin
Sourced from Chalk Hill AVA in Sonoma County, California. This region is known for its unique white ash soils from ancient volcanic activity, providing excellent drainage and mineral content that particularly suits Chardonnay cultivation.
Taste Profile
Shows classic California Chardonnay characteristics with restraint. Aromas of ripe yellow apple, pear, and citrus blossom, complemented by subtle vanilla and toasted oak. The palate offers layers of stone fruit, lemon curd, and butterscotch, balanced by bright acidity and a mineral-driven finish.
